A design budget for a startup should follow the stage, not a percentage. At pre-seed you need a starter identity, a landing page and a deck, which published guides put at a few hundred to a few thousand dollars each. At seed, a full identity system and a proper website move you into five figures. From Series A, the question becomes design capacity: a hire, an agency, a subscription or a fractional lead.
There is no trustworthy “startups spend X% on design” benchmark, and we will not invent one. What we can do is show what each stage typically needs and what the sourced price ranges are, so you can build a budget from the bottom up.
The short version
| Stage | What design usually needs to do | Typical items | Published price ranges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-seed | Look credible to first users and investors | Logo or starter identity, landing page, pitch deck | Starter identity $500–$5,000; landing page $500–$1,500 (freelancer); deck $500–$5,000 (freelancer) |
| Seed | Explain the product and convert visitors | Full identity system, marketing site, first product UI | Full identity $5,000–$25,000; site redesign $5,000–$25,000 (boutique agency); MVP UI $3,000–$10,000 |
| Series A | Ship product and marketing design every week | Ongoing capacity, product UI, sales materials | First hire about $131,500–$287,500 a year fully loaded; subscriptions $699–$4,995 a month |
| Series B | Scale quality across a growing team | Design system, design leadership, brand evolution | Fractional design lead about $4,600–$9,100 a month; agency projects $25,000+ |

Pre-seed: credible, not finished
At pre-seed the job of design is to make you look like a real company to your first users and investors. Spend little and keep it flexible; the product and positioning will change.
| Item | Published range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Logo only | $100–$2,000 | ManyPixels brand identity cost |
| Starter identity (logo, colours, type) | $500–$5,000 | ManyPixels, as above |
| Landing page, freelancer | $500–$1,500 | LanderLab (sells a page builder) |
| Pitch deck, freelancer | $500–$5,000 per deck | Waveup, last reviewed Sep 24, 2026 (a deck agency) |
Where the money goes wrong: a $20,000 brand strategy before you know your customer. Buy a starter identity you can replace.

Seed: explain and convert
With a seed round, the website and product have to explain what you do and turn visitors into users or demos. This is usually the first five-figure design spend.
| Item | Published range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Full identity system | $5,000–$25,000 (freelancer $5,000–$20,000; agency $15,000–$50,000) | ManyPixels |
| Website redesign, boutique agency | $5,000–$25,000 | 925Studios (an agency) |
| Website redesign, freelancer | $3,000–$10,000 | 925Studios, as above |
| Simple MVP UI, 5–10 screens | $3,000–$10,000 | 925Studios app design cost guide |
| Startup MVP design (agency) | $5,000–$20,000 | Dribbble, updated Mar 31, 2026 |
Bay Area agencies outside San Francisco most often list minimum projects of $25,000+ (6 of 16 firms on Clutch, read Nov 1, 2026), so a seed-stage website budget may point you to a freelancer or a small studio. See what Bay Area design agencies charge.
Series A: capacity every week
By Series A, design is no longer a set of projects. There is product work every sprint and marketing work every week. The decision is how to buy that capacity:
| Option | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| In-house designer | About $11,000–$24,000 a month fully loaded at median pay | Our BLS-based calculation |
| Design subscription | $699–$4,995 a month for the plans we compared | Subscription pricing compared |
| Agency retainer | $3,000–$30,000+ a month in seller guides | Agency cost guide |
Noondesk, which has the same owner as this site, is one subscription option at this stage for ongoing marketing and product design; its price is Not published. For the full trade-off, read design subscription vs in-house designer.
Series B: leadership and systems
At Series B the risk shifts from “not enough design” to “inconsistent design”. Spending moves to a design system, design leadership and brand evolution.
- Fractional design lead: Go Fractional reports an average of $130 an hour for fractional design leads, a middle 50% of $90 to $175, and a typical 13 hours a week, about $4,600 to $9,100 a month (Go Fractional, 5 job posts and 43 profiles, updated Nov 1, 2026). See fractional design lead.
- Head of design hire: BLS reports a median art director wage of $165,210 in the San Francisco metro and $170,140 in San Jose (May 2025, via BLS OEWS), before employer costs and equity.
- Growth-stage product design: Dribbble puts growth-stage engagements at $30,000 to $80,000 (Dribbble).
What about “percentage of revenue”?
Gartner’s 2026 CMO Spend Survey reports marketing budgets at 7.8% of company revenue in 2026, up from 7.7% in 2025. That is the whole marketing budget, not design, and the survey samples large companies. Use it as context once you have revenue, not as a target.
Build your own budget
- List what you need this year by stage, using the tables above.
- Get two or three quotes for anything over a few thousand dollars, from the same design brief.
- Put each line, its source and a contingency into the design project budget template.
- Revisit at each funding round. The right model at seed is rarely the right one at Series B.
What we could not verify
- Any sourced benchmark for startup design spend as a share of funding or revenue.
- Most ranges come from companies that sell design and do not state their method.
- Bay Area-specific prices beyond the self-reported Clutch bands and BLS wages.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a startup spend on design?
There is no reliable benchmark for startups as a share of revenue or funding. Budget by what each stage needs instead: a starter identity, landing page and deck at pre-seed (often a few thousand dollars), a full identity and website at seed (five figures), and product design capacity from Series A onward.
When should a startup hire its first designer?
When product and marketing design work is steady every week and you can give a designer context and feedback. A median San Francisco-metro graphic designer costs about $131,500 a year fully loaded; a UI-type designer in the San Jose metro about $287,500 (BLS May 2025 medians divided by 0.70).
Is the 7.8% marketing budget figure useful for startups?
Only as context. Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey reports marketing budgets at 7.8% of company revenue, but its sample of 401 marketing leaders skews to large companies. Pre-revenue startups cannot use a percentage of revenue at all.
