A design subscription costs less per request than a freelancer once you send more than about three or four requests a month. At 5 requests, a $699 subscription works out at $140 each; at 20 requests, $35 each. A freelancer charging $75 an hour for a 3-hour job costs $225 a request whether you send 5 or 20. Below that volume, or for work that needs one specialist, the freelancer usually wins.
That is the arithmetic. The rest of this guide covers what “unlimited” really means, where per-request maths breaks down, and how to decide for your own mix of work. Every subscription price below was read on the provider’s own pricing page on Nov 1, 2026.
Cost per request at 5, 10 and 20 a month
| Option (monthly billing) | Monthly price | 5 requests | 10 requests | 20 requests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ManyPixels Advanced | $699 | $140 | $70 | $35 |
| Delesign Marketer Growth | $899 | $180 | $90 | $45 |
| Penji Essentials | $995 | $199 | $100 | $50 |
| Flocksy, 2 daily hours | $1,699 | $340 | $170 | $85 |
| Designjoy | $4,995 | $999 | $500 | $250 |
| Freelancer at $50/hr × 3 hrs | per job | $150 | $150 | $150 |
| Freelancer at $75/hr × 3 hrs | per job | $225 | $225 | $225 |
| Freelancer at $100/hr × 3 hrs | per job | $300 | $300 | $300 |
Subscription prices: ManyPixels, Delesign, Penji, Flocksy, Designjoy, all read Nov 1, 2026, monthly billing, rounded to the dollar. The freelancer rows are an illustration: 3 hours a request is our assumption, and the hourly rates sit inside the $25 to $150 range ManyPixels gives for freelancers (a source that sells subscriptions).
Break-even: a subscription costs the same as a freelancer when monthly fee ÷ freelancer cost per request = requests a month. For the $699 plan against a $225 freelancer job, that is about 3 requests (our arithmetic).
What “unlimited” actually buys
Every plan above lets you queue unlimited requests. None of them works on unlimited requests at once:
| Provider | What limits throughput | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ManyPixels | 1 daily output on Advanced, 2 on Business | Pricing page |
| Penji | 2 active projects on Essentials, 3 on Agency Partner | Pricing page |
| Designjoy | One request at a time | Home page |
| Flocksy | Hours per day (2 daily hours = 42 hours a month) | Pricing page |
| Delesign | 2 hours of dedicated design time per business day | Pricing page |
So 20 requests a month is realistic for small, repeatable assets: social posts, ad resizes, slide fixes, email headers. It is not realistic for 20 landing pages. Complex work spans several days on any plan, and ManyPixels says so directly on its pricing page.
Where per-request maths misleads
- Requests are not equal. A social post and a pitch deck are both “one request”. Count hours of work, not requests, if your mix is uneven.
- Freelancers often charge per project, not per hour. ManyPixels lists freelance logos at $300 to $2,500 and landing pages at $500 to $5,000 (ManyPixels, Apr 15, 2026). Use real quotes for your recurring jobs.
- Revisions differ. Subscriptions include revisions in the fee. Freelancers may include a set number of rounds and bill the rest.
- Management time is real. With a freelancer you brief, chase and quality-check. With a subscription you still brief, but the queue and project management sit with the provider.
- Slow months still cost money. A subscription you do not use is the most expensive option of all. Most plans we read can be paused or cancelled month to month.
Which to choose
| Your situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 small requests a month | Freelancer, paid per job |
| A steady stream of small marketing assets | Subscription |
| One big project (brand, website) | Freelancer or agency, priced per project |
| Specialist style or illustration | A freelancer you choose for that style |
| Product UI needing deep context | In-house or a dedicated designer |
| Uneven volume: busy launches, quiet months | Subscription you can pause, or a freelancer on call |

Where Noondesk fits
Noondesk (same owner as this site) is a design subscription with a dedicated designer for marketing and product work. It is not ranked here and its price is shown as Not published, so compare any quote you get against the per-request table above.
For every subscription price we found, including services that do not publish one, see design subscription pricing compared.
What we could not verify
- How many hours a “request” takes; the 3-hour figure is an assumption for illustration.
- Current, well-sampled freelance designer rates for the Bay Area.
- Output quality and turnaround in practice; we read pricing pages, not service records.
- Prices change often, and several pages show discounts. Re-check before you buy; we re-read pricing pages every 60 days.
Frequently asked questions
Is a design subscription cheaper than a freelancer?
Per request, usually yes once you send more than a handful of requests a month. A $699 plan works out at $140 a request at 5 requests and $35 at 20. A freelancer billing $75 an hour for 3 hours a request costs $225 a request at any volume. Below about three requests a month, the freelancer is usually cheaper.
What is the catch with unlimited design subscriptions?
Throughput. 'Unlimited' means unlimited requests in a queue, but plans limit how much is worked on at once: one daily output, two active projects, or a set number of hours a day. Large jobs such as a full website or brand identity take several days and block the queue.
Do design subscriptions have contracts?
Most we checked say month to month with no contract, but quarterly and yearly billing usually buys a discount and may commit you. Superside is the exception among the services we read: an annual term with a $15,000 monthly minimum.
When is a freelancer the better choice?
For a few contained jobs a month, for specialist work a subscription does not cover well (illustration, a specific style, complex product UI), or when you want one named person you choose and keep.
